How many smoke detectors do you need and where?

Various field tests have shown that placing a smoke detector on every level of a household provides the best all around protection and coverage for the smallest investment. A smoke detector in every room will give the fastest detection times, the slightest increase in the time to escape may or may not justify the additional expense.

At minimum, people should install a smoke detector in the hallway outside of each sleeping area. If you sleep with the door closed you might want to consider adding an additional detector inside of your bedroom.

Do you need a smoke detector?

If you have a security system in your home, make sure you have a smoke alarm that can be integrated into the burglar alarm system also. It will give your whole house protection and you'll never have to worry about it. Newer smoke detectors use lithium batteries and can last for ten years. That's a lot better than the old style smoke detectors whose batteries must be replaced once or twice a year.

Firefighters say that people die in fires when there are no smoke detectors or when the smoke detectors aren't working, either because someone has disabled them or because the batteries are dead. People also tend to have the most trouble with smoke detectors in the kitchen because it's so frequently triggered by a dinner gone awry.

What is a smoke detector?

A smoke detector is a device that detects smoke, typically as an indicator of fire. Commercial, industrial, and mass residential devices issue a signal to a fire alarm system, while household detectors, known as smoke alarms, generally issue a local audible and/or visual alarm from the detector itself.

A hidden camera is a still or video camera used to film people without their knowledge. The camera is "hidden" because it is either not visible to the subject being filmed, or is disguised as another object. Hidden cameras have become popular for household surveillance, and can be built into common household objects such as smoke detectors, clock radios, motion detectors, ball caps, plants, and cellphones. Hidden cameras may also be used commercially or industrially as security cameras.

A hidden camera can be wired or wireless. The former will be connected to a TV, VCR, or DVR, whereas a wireless hidden camera can be used to transmit a video signal to a receiver within a small radius (up to a few hundred feet).

Some hidden camera shows have led to lawsuits or being denied to air by the people who were trapped in set-ups that they found unpleasant.
